This is the way the story of this three guys starts…
From one of the directors of the tv series The Kill Point, Josh Trank, tomorrow arrives to our screens (in Spain) his first movie, Chronicle. This movie tells the story of Andrew (played by Dane DeHaan (who you may have seen in the tv series In Treatment or in a small role in True Blood), Matt (Alex Rusell) and Steve (Michael B. Jordan, habitual actor playing episodic roles in tons of different tv series), three guys that one night, after getting exposed by accident to the radiation of some strange rock inside a cave, end up with powers based on telekinesis. As we would hear in SpiderMan “with great power, comes great responsibility”, and this is what the story written by the screenwriter Max Landis (son of the director of the more than famous music video Thriller, John Landis) explores. The movie shows us what can happen when big responsibilities are giving to people who are not ready for it, this can even be seen as a reflexion of the actual moment that we live in, in which the social issues going on right now all over the world, and the politics around them, are making people think one day after another that maybe the ones with the power are not the right ones. Well, maybe I’m going too far with these thoughts… May I be right or not, but the truth is that Josh Trank moves the viewer to some kind of reflexion about power, corruption and how people can react to some kind of situations in which they are not meant to be and that gives them some kind of power over the rest of people.
The director has chosen a very particular way of narration based on the found footage style that we already saw in Cannibal Holocaust and that became very known with The Blair Witch Project and its marketing strategy in 1999. Right now this way of narration is becoming very popular in film making (movies such as REC, Paranormal Activity or Monster among others). But the way Trank uses it, is very singular for two reasons: in one hand, in this kind of movies we are used to always have somebody carrying the camera and not being able to see that person, but in this concrete case the powers of Andrew lets him move the camera far away from him so that we can see him as if we were doing it from the eyes of an external viewer; this plays a really interesting game relating the external viewer habitual in the institutional filming and the fresh input of the found footage style. In the other hand, Trank takes the camera’s use as a narration character to a next level, proclaiming all kind of different cameras (security cameras, other people cameras…) as witnesses of the events.
A low cost movie (less than 15 million dollars, a very low quantity for the industry) far away from the habitual heroes’ movie that gets us closer to the antiheroes, showing the humanity behind powers charge. Worth watching*, although in its too short 84 minutes, only achieves to scratch the surface of the characters, without deepen too much inside them.
*Note: Some people that watched it with me didn’t like it, so don’t blame me if you don’t either. This is just an opinion (as any other). 😉
